About event

Photo book with texts by Ukrainian young people.

The alphabet stands for order, structure and reliability. But war is destroying this world. It penetrates the lives of young people, disrupts familiar routines and forces them to flee. For refugee Ukrainian young people, this means that nothing is the same as before - not even the language.
Under the leadership of the artist Masha Pryven, a group of young people who fled Ukraine to Berlin to escape the Russian war of aggression have reinterpreted the German alphabet. In an innovative project, 26 terms are presented in photographs and filled with personal thoughts. In doing so, they consciously forego a fixed order and create a reflection of the disorder that the war leaves behind.
Every picture, every written thought testifies to the courageous attempt to find a new approach to one's own identity in the midst of chaos and to come to terms with the changed life situation. The Alphabet of War is not only a creative testimony of personal experiences in exile, but also an invitation to discover the transformative power of language and images.

Masha Pryven is a Ukrainian artist who has lived in Berlin since 2014. In 2024 she received a scholarship from the Goethe Institute for her project with local youth in Narva, Estonia. She is currently a master's student in the Art in Context program at the Berlin University of the Arts.
