Axel Dörner

Axel Dörner was born in 1964 in Cologne, Germany. He started playing the piano at the age of nine, and the trumpet at the age of eleven at a local music school. He studied trumpet with Jon Eardley in Cologne and piano at the Conservatory in Arnhem, Netherlands, then piano and trumpet (with Malte Burba) at the Musikhochschule in Cologne from 1989-1994. He is one of the unique voices in the field of free improvisation. In the late 1990s, he developed a completely different language for the trumpet. Most of the ensembles he is a member of are characterized by a non-hierarchical collaboration of the musicians involved. He is mostly associated with musicians and communities in Berlin, London, Chicago and New York. Currently, his discography includes more than 150 CDs/LPs.
