Moin

When Joe Andrews and Tom Halstead released their first record as Moin on a split with Pete Swanson in 2012, they could be seen as a post-punk side project to their industrial dub Raime. The British electronic scene, formed among others around the Blackest Ever Black label, drew heavily on inspiration from the post-punk of the eighties, and Moin represented the reverse of this approach with their guitar sound following the trends of electronic music.

The character of Moin as a side project changed no later than 2021, when the duo was joined by drummer Valentina Magalleti. In this line-up, they have released two albums Moot! and Paste, both of which have a noticeable shift in inspiration from the post-punk of the eighties to the post-hardcore of the nineties. The inspiration from the legendary Slint is evident, but instead of emotional vocals, Moin work with repetitive vocal samples, instead of cathartic gradations, they offer a subtly constructed trance.
