Oneohtrix Point Never
Oneohtrix Point Never is the project of Brooklyn musician, composer and producer of experimental electronics Daniel Lopatin.
A visionary of electronic music, Daniel Lopatin aka Oneohtrix Point Never has received such an exceptional designation from many quarters. He produced recordings for David Byrne, wrote for FKA Twigs or Anohni, composed music for the films Good times (2017) and Drahokam (2019).
What but what sets him apart from all the others is his solo work, which has earned him the reputation of one of the greatest musical pioneers of today. Music always unmistakable and original, which absorbs an incredible breadth of influences - from minimalism to noise to collages. In his compositions, he combines old and new – samples, synthesizers and acoustic instruments, scraps of archive television dialogues or 90s commercials, sometimes he makes a trip to pop, alt rock, minimalism or noise music. His compositions are sometimes dark, but sometimes they can disarm you with the peaceful mood and atmosphere of contemporary pop.
His last album for 2024 called Again (2023) is again a typical sound amalgam. He is inspired by post-rock, progressive rock and orchestral music, mixing electronics with strings. The result is full of individuality, playfulness and wit, but it is not cold calculation at all. On the contrary – the songs overflow with ideas, personal and emotional concern. It's as if they reflect Lopatin's memories of what he heard in his youth - but in the hindsight of a middle-aged man. "The basic impulse to create for me often comes from a certain sense of confusion that surrounds memories of the music of my youth," he says. "I always return to them as an infinite, albeit probably false, source," he adds with exaggeration.
