Pavel Zlámal

Pavel Zlámal is a performer, improviser, author of music and a graduate of the conservatory in Teplice, master's and doctoral program at the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts in Brno. In the course of his studies, he spent two years at the Sibelius Academy Helsinki (FIN), in addition to his major - the clarinet - he also studied and developed the bass clarinet and saxophone. In addition to classical music, during his studies he increasingly devoted himself to modern and contemporary music, as well as jazz and experimental music. He participated in many international master classes, jazz and experimental workshops.

Not only within the framework of his doctoral studies, he focused his attention and practical activity on contemporary and experimental music with a significant focus on the field of free improvisation. It has a wide virtuoso clarinet repertoire of world composers (in addition to classical works by W.A. Mozart, C.M. von Weber, R. Schumann, A. Copland, etc., also modern contemporary ones such as: C. Nielsen, K. Stockhausen, L. Berio, E. Denisov , P. Boulez, F. Donatoni, C. Ambrosini, B. Mantovani, A. Berg, G. Scelsi, I. Stravinsky, John Adams, John Corigliano, etc.). He premiered works dedicated to Peter Graham: Broken Concerto (2012), the church composition Death has a smile on its face (2014), COAX (2015) ; or Michal Nejtek's clarinet solo Tasted Thoughts (2015). In addition to solo concert activity in the field of contemporary and experimental music, he has collaborated with musicians such as: Rod Paton, David Dorůžka, Peter Evans, Bernadette Zeilinger, Peter Graham, Nicolas Collins, Hilary Jeffery, Didrik Ingvaldsen, Dag Magnus Narvessen, Chris Heenan, Ivan Palacký and others. He forms a permanent improvisational duo with double bassist George Cremaschi (USA).

As a versatile player and improviser, he performs with musical groups in the field of classical, popular, jazz and experimental music: he has been engaged by the orchestra of the National Theater in Brno, the Municipal Theater in Brno, he currently works in the Brno big band B-Side Band, The Fireballs & Gone Hepsville (authentic & original 50's rock'n'roll band). He is an established player on the jazz scene as an author, leader and sideman. He was a member of the international ÖNCZkekvist improvising orchestra project, with which he recorded a CD on the Vienna Radio, he collaborates with the Prague Improvisation Orchestra, the BERG Orchestra, the Brno Contemporary Orchestra and the Brno Philharmonic.

In addition, he is the founder and leader of his own groups: Next Phase (avant-garde-jazz), Brno Improvising Unit (experimental/free music), Pavel Zlámal & PQ, or the improvisational Divergent Connections Orchestra - he has already released a CD with all of them. He also released albums with his other projects: Heterofón, ZKKP, Brünnwerk. On the Brno scene, he leads the concept of managed/conducted jam sessions "Broken Jam".

He is the author of his own music: in addition to the repertoire of his own bands, graphic and conceptual scores, small jazz compositions, he is responsible for the still unfinished cycle Way of Consideration for solo instruments (clarinet/bass clarinet/saxophones), a selection of which premiered at the Music Olomouc 2015 festival, or the larger 40-minute opus for solo saxophone Horizon of the 7th written for the Brno festival Exposition of New Music 2016. In 2019, he wrote the multi-part composition Organizations for small orchestra & solo saxophone commissioned by the Brno Contemporary Orchestra. He is also signed with Brünnwerk for the music for the theatrical performance Pravidla bincárna in the Brno theater Husa na provázku.

He performed as a soloist and member of various formations at festivals of contemporary and experimental music, among others < em>New Music Exhibition, Alternative, vs.Interpretation, New Music Plus, Ostrava Days, Music Olomouc, Art's Birthday, Hear Me!, Ugly Music Festival, Jazz Goes to Town, JazzfestBrno, etc.

The gained experience will also benefit not only JAMU in Brno as a teacher.
