Fotografie zo súboru The End Is Near, Here pochádzajú z rovnomennej knihy Michaela Dressela vydanej v roku 2024 a ukazujú americkú spoločnosť rozdelenú extrémnym nacionalizmom, politickou polarizáciou, náboženským fanatizmom a posadnutosťou zbraňami, sprevádzanú chudobou a morálnym úpadkom. Jeho portréty dopĺňajú krajinárske zábery, ktoré túto atmosféru ešte viac podčiarkujú.
Michael Dressel sa narodil v roku 1958 vo východnom Berlíne. Krátko študoval scénografiu na Weißensee Academy of Art. Po neúspešnom pokuse o útek na Západ bol 2 roky väznený na Boroch a vo východnom Nemecku. Po prepustení sa nakoniec dostal do Západného Berlína a v roku 1985 sa presťahoval do Los Angeles. Tam celý život pracoval ako zvukový editor na veľkých hollywoodskych filmoch (napr. Gran Torino, Zrodila sa hviezda, Joker a mnohé ďalšie), čo mu okrem iného zabezpečilo členstvo v Oscarovej akadémii. Od nedávneho odchodu z filmového priemyslu delí svoj čas medzi Los Angeles a Berlín a zameriava sa na fotografickú tvorbu. Jeho fotografická kniha Lost Angeles vyšla v roku 2022 vo vydavateľstvách Hartmann Books a Gingko Press. Svoju najnovšiu knihu The End Is Near, Here (2024) z vydavateľstva Hartmann Books autor uviedol na svetovom fotografickom festivale Rencontres d’Arles.

Photographs from the series The End Is Near, Here come from the book of the same title by Michael Dressel, published in 2024, and depict an American society divided by extreme nationalism, political polarisation, religious fanaticism, and an obsession with firearms, accompanied by poverty and moral decline. His portraits are complemented by landscape images that further underscore this atmosphere.
Michael Dressel was born in 1958 in East Berlin. He studied scenography at the Weißensee Academy of Art. After an unsuccessful attempt to escape to the West, he was imprisoned for two years. After his release, he eventually reached West Berlin and in 1985 moved to Los Angeles. There he spent his entire career working as a sound editor on major Hollywood films (such as Gran Torino with Clint Eastwood, A Star Is Born, Joker, and many others), which earned him membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Since recently leaving the film industry, he has been dividing his time between Los Angeles and Berlin and focusing on his photographic practice. His photobook Lost Angeles was published in 2022 by Hartmann Books and Gingko Press. His most recent book, The End Is Near, Here (2024), published by Hartmann Books, was presented at the international photography festival Rencontres d’Arles.
