About event
The Academy for Early Music Berlin is dedicating itself to the rediscovery of Emilie Mayer (1812-1883) in a unique project close to her heart.
(English below)
The title of a current biography describes the Berliner by choice as “Europe's greatest composer”, who also caused a sensation in the mid-19th century at the Schauspielhaus am Gendarmenmarkt not far from the Pierre Boulez Saal, but was quickly forgotten after her death. While Mayer's songs and chamber music have been heard more frequently for some time, the rediscovery of her symphonic work has only just begun. The Academy for Early Music Berlin is now offering a unique opportunity to do this: in three concerts, all of the composer's traditional orchestral works will be heard, which will be specially compiled from the manuscripts: 5 symphonies, 4 overtures and the concert for piano and orchestra (soloist: Alexander Melnikov).
Concert 3
Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin
Bernhard Forck, Concertmaster
Emilie Mayer
Faust Overture op. 46
Symphony No. 6 in E major
Symphony No. 5 in F minor
With the kind support of the LOTTO Foundation Berlin and the friends and supporters of the Academy for Early Music Berlin

The Academy für Alte Musik Berlin is dedicating a unique project to the rediscovery of Emilie Mayer (1812-1883).
The title of a recently published biography hails her as “Europe’s greatest female composer.” Emilie Mayer (1812–1883), who made her home in Berlin for many years and had some of her works performed at the Schauspielhaus on Gendarmenmarkt, just a few hundred meters from the Pierre Boulez Saal, fell into oblivion shortly after her death. While her songs and chamber music have been performed more frequently over the last few years, the rediscovery of her symphonic works is only just beginning. The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin now presents a survey of her music unprecedented in scope: all of Mayer’s surviving orchestral works, newly transcribed from the composer’s manuscripts, will be heard over the course of three concerts.
Concert 3
Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin
Alexander Melnikov, Piano
Bernhard Forck, Concertmaster
Emilie Mayer
Faust Overture Op. 46
Symphony No. 6 in E major
Symphony No. 5 in F minor
With support from LOTTO-Stiftung Berlin and the friends and sponsors of the Academy for Early Music Berlin
