About event
The ceremonial hall in the Central Cemetery of Brno was built on the basis of a project by architect Bohuslav Fuchs and his assistant Josef Polášek. Plans for the new ceremonial hall were approved by the city council in the autumn of 1925. In April 1926 construction work began and in less than a year the construction was completed. It was ceremonially opened on 3. 4. 1927. The building was built in the style of constructivism and for its time it was, especially due to perfect technical equipment, progressive and innovative. Architects designed the location of a new ceremonial hall near both cemetery gates from Vídeňská Street. Its mass forms a simple slightly outstanding cubus of the hall with three bays, in whose space there were placed marble catafalka. In the exterior, the alternation of smoothly plastered and gray masonry emphasizes the ruggedness of individual cubic volumes. The interior of the ceremonial hall is divided by four pairs of columns in the inner corners, their vertical action emphasizes narrow windows with luxfer panels. These pairs of pillars carry a flat ceiling and the creation of a dignified cult space into which daylight penetrates only narrow glass slits. In the years 2022-23 it was completely reconstructed after almost 100 years and is the first in the Czech Republic to be equipped with a robotic catfalk, which returned according to historical photos to its original form. A novelty is the data projector to screen photos or videos during the last farewell.
