Xiu Xiu
Since forming in 2002, Xiu Xiu has achieved cult status in experimental music circles for their unmistakable queer portraits of extremes of violence and beauty. Its only permanent member is Jamie Stewart. Their discography is "perversely catchy" (Women as Lovers, Oh No) and in their most challenging moments (Angel Guts, A Promise ) takes listeners on disturbing journeys through naturalistic landscapes of pain.
Since 2009, Xiu Xiu's second member is multi-instrumentalist Angela Seo - the band's line-up also included Thor Harris and Christopher Pravdica (Swans), currently completed by David Kendrick (Sparks, Devo). The group's sound is characterized by eclectic influences, from contemporary classical music and Asian folk to aggressive post-punk in the style of The Birthday Party or Suicide. Visual culture is also an important point of reference for the group's overall aesthetic - from Joan Chen's film Xiu Xiu, which gave the project its name, to Twin Peaks, whose soundtrack Xiu Xiu recorded on the album Xiu Xiu Plays the Music of Twin Peaks. The band's thirteenth album Ignore Grief was released in March 2023.
Xiu Xiu will release their fourteenth studio album in the fall of 2024 called 13" Frank Beltrame Italian Stiletto with Bison Horn Grips .Nine brand new songs to seal the deal with those who will listen to the album from start to finish, because the album is a message that cannot be read in parts or skips.California group founded in 2002 Stewart, who currently also features multi-instrumentalist Angela Seo, deals with the innermost human feelings and emotions in his music.
Genre definitions are hard to find for Stewart's raw experimental songwriting to the harrowing reality of human existence, loneliness, fear, violence and pain, accompanied by guitar noise, chromatic melodies, fragmented electronics and (avant-)pop synthesizer lines and dark ambient surfaces. perhaps just the opposite; finds beauty in surrendering to human destiny.
